I came across a video for the movie Black Rain on a blog recently. It's a movie starring Michael Douglas that I've never seen, but remembered some of it was filmed at 27th and Lexington, near the studio I had in NYC. So I did a little searching and found this (motorcycle scene @ 7:00 on the video to be exact). Like most movies you see being filmed, there's a lot of waiting/ setting up before any action takes place, so every once in awhile I'd take a break and lean out the window to see what was going on.

Later that evening I wrapped up the job I was working on and headed home down 28th street. I stopped at the corner at Madison where the light was about to change. In front of me was this guy on a motorcycle waiting for the light to turn. Realizing they had just been filming around the corner I took a closer look through the helmet's tinted visor (for obvious reasons, different headgear than in the film) and saw that it was Michael Douglas. The light soon changed and he roared off towards uptown and I continued walking home thinking what a cool town this was.

They became a sporadic diversion, and creative exercise that took me away from my airbrush art- and now my computer art. Above are some images from an old Pin the Tail on the Donkey game I picked up years ago. Unfortunately the game inside, although never used, is falling to pieces due to the combination of age and cheap paper. One of my favorite parts of the packaging is the look, with raised eyebrow no less, that the donkey appears to be giving the shouting kid over on the left.

Bohemian Eggs...

Above are 3 Czech Easter eggs that were given to me by my Aunts, who would get them from some of their friends that still carried on the craft in the U.S.. The eggs were hard boiled, then dyed and an outline was scratched in. Working from that outline the final 'highlight' art was etched. Being a very fragile canvas it was possible to get well into the design only to hit a soft spot and have the shell break. The common response to this (besides a word or two of frustration) would be to peel away the art and eat the egg before moving on to the next oval canvas. The finished eggs become hollow after time and, like the one above, sometimes just accidently break. Happy Easter.

In this recent illustration of M.I.A. the telecommunication 'masts' surrounding her relate to the theme and title of her latest single, 'I'm Down like your Internet Connection'.
