Pulp Passion...

I recently came across this project by artist Richard Prince ( known for his paperback based 'nurse paintings') for the show, "Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation" at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. In a more colorful variation of a Christo work he wrapped the museum's exterior with enlarged 'After Dark' paperback covers.

Clearing the Clutter...

Back from a vacation on the Outer Banks of N. Carolina. I'm all unpacked (well almost) and am now slogging through my email.  I tried to keep up with my in-box while away, but I never quite managed to stay ahead of it.

Above is an illustration I did a few years ago for the NY Times that is about that feeling of 'vacation email dread'.

Relaxed Fit...

The simple and bold graphics on hang tags are like miniature posters to me and why I started collecting them years ago. Here's a link to some of my tags. Enjoy.

Prehistoric Tools...

Remember Rubylith?, Scum-X?, Rapidographs?, Cello-Tak ? Here's a must see site featuring some of graphic art's forgotten goodies run by the one and only Lou Brooks. The playful 'french curve' and airbrush compressor manual above are a couple of my old tools of the trade that are included on the site.

Green Lights...

Add ImageWhen I see a classic old sign being taken down I like to think that someone has claimed the stately, oversized letters that spell out the company's name or make up their logo, but realize often times they just end up in the junkyard. Have a look at what this Finnish company is doing to give a new life to some salvaged signage.

Bent Metal...

For a number of reasons- including the"Hard Workin' Bob" tag, this parked car caught my eye at my sister-in-law's wedding reception this weekend (congrats Tava and Ted). I love the combination of bent steel, graffiti, stickers, and the blue and red paint pattern. In a way the car kind of looks like someone's low budget take on a BMW art car.
Anyway, it had California plates (taped inside the rear window) so maybe, if it makes it back, one day it'll end up in one of these incredible David Buckingham scrap metal sculptures.

Lawn Chairs and more...

Artists and designers with the desire to work both within and outside of their 'main craft' have always inspired me. One of these would be Viktor Schreckengost whose work ranged from ceramics (his satirical Apocalypse ‘42 is above), to fine art, to industrial design - including over 100 bikes, and an iconic metal lawn chair, for Sears. See some more of his amazing work here.
